Sofia Previte and Matthew Mraulak were chosen as the Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of December 4th.
The athletes were chosen and nominated by their coaches for their hard work and dedication to their sport. Their overall performance and attitude toward bowling caught the attention of their coaches and made them all the more likely to be recognized.
Sofia Previte, a junior who was recognized, recalls how her dedication allowed her to achieve the recognition.
“My coach nominated me because he has seen me work hard through all the seasons and off seasons to be the best I can be and to work towards goals we both believe I can reach,” says Previte.
To become Student-Athlete of the Week, students needed to show exceptional traits, not only in their sport, but also in their classrooms. Getting selected proves to everyone that those students deserve to be recognized for all that they put in to be elite athletes and students.
Andrew Brabant, head coach of the boys’ team, admires how Previte and Mraulak earned their spot.
“They both show what it means to be a student-athlete. They’re exceptional in both the classroom and on the lanes. It feels like an honor having both athletes being from a sport I coach because they’re a direct representative of the bowling program and the city of Struthers,” says Brabant.
Not only does this award bring pride to the coaches, but it also brings a lot of pride to the players themselves. It takes a lot of work, so actually winning is a very rewarding experience. No matter what, as long as students try their best and work hard in their sport, they will be an option for the award.
Previte encourages other student-athletes to work for the same award she got.
“To other athletes, just keep working hard and pushing yourself to be the best athlete you can be,” says Previte.
