Halle Minchin-Skook is the girls basketball varsity assistant coach at Struthers High School.

Minchin-Skook has been coaching girls basketball for eight years and has coached softball for five.

Coach M has grown up both playing and having an interest in basketball. Her love for the sport has never ended and only continues to grow.

I started playing basketball when I was five years old, and I still play recreationally, so in total, 28 years. I have been attending Struthers basketball games since I was in diapers, though, with my mom,” says Minchin-Skook.

Coach Minchin-Skook is a former student at Struthers and attended college at Youngstown State University.

Seeing the players’ progress throughout the years is one of the best parts of coaching to Coach M.

“The best part of coaching is watching the girls grow throughout the season and over the years. I feel that what you learn through sports, like discipline, work ethic, and teamwork, are all skills that can make you successful in any profession and in life, so being able to be a part of that journey is always special,” says Minchin-Skook.

Coaching was not an idea for her until the end of college. With a little help from her high school coach, Coach Grandy, she discovered her passion for coaching.

The coach was prepared for the drastic change of the lineup and the differences due to the hiring of a new head coach, but the team pulled themselves together.

“I knew coming into this year with the loss of almost our whole starting lineup, that we were going to be young and inexperienced. I also knew that we have talented, hard working players and we would weather whatever storms came our way. Also, with a new head coach and our unconventional summer, I expected that we were going to have a lot of catch up work to do as well,” says Minchin-Skook.
