“Mean Girls” is a musical theater film that is also a remake of the original 2004 film, “Mean Girls.”
This film follows a formerly homeschooled girl named Cady (Angourie Rice) as she faces the many cliques and social hierarchies in high school. Cady meets Janice (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey) who show her how the school works from a student perspective. The pair, especially Janice, ends up encouraging Cady into infiltrating the most popular clique known as the “Plastics.” The Plastics consist of three people: Karen (Avantika Vandanapu), Gretchen (Bebe Wood), and Regina (Reneé Rapp). Cady quickly befriends all of them at lunch and continues to sit with them. As Cady continues to hangout with the Plastics, she begins to find out little secrets about Regina and uses them against her. However, Cady becomes too obsessed with Regina, so much so that Cady becomes a true mean girl herself. In the end, Cady realizes that all of the popularity doesn’t matter in the real world.
When Cady first sees Regina, the song “Meet the Plastics” starts to play. The film made everyone freeze in Regina’s path, which is perfect for the kind of character she is. It makes her look like she has a powerful grip on everything. The singing sounded very sly and condescending. Regina talks about how great and popular she is while still having a captivating tone.
The song “Apex Predator” is sung by Janice and Damian, who are both warning Cady about befriending Regina. The song starts off very mild with Janice just singing the melody. However, towards the end of the song, both Janice and Damian start to harmonize and sing with more power and emotion. This gives the song more life and makes it seem more believable that the two genuinely despise Regina.
This movie deserves a 7/10. This was due to the fact that a lot of the songs sound very watered down and could use less autotune. However, the comical aspects were great, and the plot stayed consistent throughout the movie.
