An author with over thirty books under his belt is now widely popular and known for his unique takes on every topic and plotline that he writes into fruition. Neal Shusterman graces everyone’s pages with his horrifying, eye-opening and thoughtfully written novels.
In 1988, author Neal Shusterman published his first novel, “The Shadow Club.” It was well received by the audience for a first time novel. It gained attention from its unique exploration of those who are forgotten and left behind. Neal continues this trend in unique writing onward.
Speaking of unique, in the early 2000’s, a very uncomfortable and thought-provoking series was released, titled “Unwind.” This grating series begs the question of how to deal with utilizing all of life. This series is morally questionable and quite dark as it observes the life of unwanted children. This hair-raising series was not very recognized until the author was more well-known.
This author truly took off in 2015, when he won the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. This award was granted for his novel, “Challenger Deep,” a deep self-reflection of the mental illnesses present with teens of all ages. This was a topic that was bold at the time, but touched the hearts of many, especially those teens the book was written for.
After his recognition, he began a trend of writing multiple books for various series. These include “Skinjacker,” “Scythe,” and the rest of the “Unwind Dystology.” A lot of his series leaned into the darker sides of society. They featured questionable morality gray topics. They were often a mix of horror and human nature, and this is how he continued for a few odd years.
Now, in the present time, Shusterman has slowed down substantially. He focuses more on single release books. These releases such as “Dry,” “Roxy,” and even “Game Changer” are long books discussing a certain topic of his choosing. Nowadays, he tends to focus more heavily on social issues rather than horror.
Shusterman is more popular now than he ever was and is well renowned for books geared towards a younger audience, such as teens and young adults. He has good messages and thoughtful reflection on modern day life that exists within his books. His writings truly are a treat, with a good meaning and a motive to read them and get lost in his books.
