For a few years, the track and field shot put and discus coach was Dalton Fussnecker. Now with him gone, who will step up to the plate?
Colin Mateo starts coaching pre-season to prepare for the 2024 spring season.
After having the same coach for a few years, the shot put and discus team has a new coach.
Mateo has come forward to help the Struthers High School track team succeed.
“I’m currently a volunteer coach for the track and field team,” says Mateo.
People tend to be hesitant to want to join a sport in high school when they didn’t do it in middle school. However, track is a sport you can pick up whenever you want to try and be successful.
Track isn’t just running; there are other parts of track, and it is all about personal growth.
“Of course you can join in high school even if you didn’t participate in middle school. Even if you don’t like to run, trust me track isn’t only about running fast but is also about progress and development of our abilities no matter if you are a runner, jumper or thrower for our team,” says Mateo.
Mateo has done track and field for a few years and has graduated high school. That led to him going to college to become a volunteer coach.
With Mateo being in the Sokolov Honors College, he has to sign up to help others in the community.
“One of the reasons I became a coach is also because I am in the Honors College at YSU and to stay inside this program you need to complete multiple hours of volunteer service in the community. So, becoming a volunteer coach became a no-brainer because I love this sport, and I needed the hours,” says Mateo.
