As much as everyone always says ‘go outside,’ not enough people listen. Everyone needs time outside; traveling is one the best ways to make sure you’re outside, and it’s enjoyable.
So, where should you go, and why is travel more important now than ever?
Travel is such a broad idea, even going to the park’s a great start, but everyone should make an effort to go places. Jonathan Look, Forbes author who chose to sell it all and travel the world, said, “Through traveling, you learn quickly that it is foolish to put people into categories and that the cartoonish impressions that others ascribe to other nationalities are invariably inaccurate.” Look’s outlook is that of exploration, and a want to find what he’s looking for in the world. He describes how disconnected we are as a society, stating, “Sometimes our beautiful world seems like a scary place. The news that we are drip-fed through our devices often paints a biased and disproportionally terrifying picture. Technologically, we are more connected, but in many ways more isolated than ever.” Biased perspectives create a stigma around going around the globe, especially in the U.S.; this stigma stops many from being willing to explore the world.
While many are home-stuck, it’s a hard cycle to get out of. Too many people go into a loop of sleep-work-home-repeat, and they lose time while just trying to make do. While it may sound backwards, the best way to get out of that cycle of just ‘trying to make do’, is to just break it, get out more, make time for you. Travel is an incredibly important thing; it’s important to be outside, do things and take time for yourself. The best part is that travel doesn’t necessarily need to be expensive; it’s easy to cut costs on a vacation. Many times the costs of goods and travel are too expensive, but with time and research, there are plenty of ways to make it work.
It doesn’t really matter the destination: just go. While it may seem difficult to make the time for it, every minute’s worth of travel is worth it. Travelling should be a much more ‘anticipated’ thing; it’s become so unpopular. Look is correct; we have become too attached to our phones, to the news, to social media, when there could be much less stress just out the door. Promoting exploring the world is the first step to making it both a better place for you, and everyone else within it.
