Directed by Marc Webb, “The Amazing Spider-Man” hit theaters on July 3rd, 2012.
With a total runtime of about 2 hours and 16 minutes, the award winning film stars Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. It takes audiences through a rollercoaster of emotions when Peter is bitten by a radioactive spider, giving him his own spider-like superpowers. He battles the antagonist of the film, Dr. Curt Connors, who experiments on himself to become a reptilian monster known as “The Lizard.” At the same time, Peter is trying to balance his relationship with Gwen and save the city from Connors’ wrath.
One of the most notable aspects of this movie is the chemistry between Garfield and Stone. The two hit it off extremely well during filming, adding so much to the characters and their love story. The Oscar nominees improvised throughout the film, making it feel way more authentic. It really shows how the two characters need each other in order to overcome the conflicts of the film. It all takes a devastating turn in the sequel.
Another great thing about this movie is the overall production. Unlike earlier versions of “Spider-Man,” this version prioritized stunts and athleticism rather than relying on CGI and special effects. Garfield himself trained in parkour and gymnastics for 6 months in order to fully encapsulate the abilities of Spider-Man. The film was also shot in 3D, giving audiences a first person view of what it’s like to swing through Manhattan, New York from Spider-Man’s perspective.
Overall, this film is a 9/10 for its notable acting and exceptional production and dedication.
