TUNERS, TANKS, TURBOS: DEEP DIVE INTO 2001 CLASSIC “FAST AND FURIOUS”

“Fast and Furious” is a movie directed by Rob Cohen and written by Gary Scott. This action film is about an undercover cop infiltrating an underground racing crew to investigate a series of crimes and finds himself in a deep friendship with the leader.

When this film was released, it grossed $207 million worldwide dollars. “Fast and Furious” begins at the LA port, with a heist crew driving three heavily set cars. They hijacked a semi-truck loaded with electronics and escaped into the night. Meanwhile, LAPD officer Brian O’Conner is sent to go undercover to locate which crew was responsible. Brian investigates the “Market & Cafe” managed by Mia, sister to the notorious street racer, Dom Toretto. Dom’s crew also arrives-Vince, Leon, Jesse and Letty. Vince becomes suspicious of Brian and picks a fight with him. Brian will go on to claim a bigger bond with Dom and will have to make the decision to turn him in or not.

One downside about the movie is the weak villain arc. They could have changed how “powerful” Johnny’s gang was. They undercooked the rivalry and made it less suspenseful. Instead of making it more high stakes for good guys, they made it like a dogwalk.

Another thing that could be critiqued is the inconsistent pacing.  Even though the show was overall a good show, they took away many emotions by speeding through suspenseful parts of the movie. The whole idea with a fast-paced movie is cool, but it is more enjoyable when you can really sink into the emotions of the movie. Many fans wish that this was fixed in future films.

The movie deserves a 9/10. The show makes the viewer feel on their toes and a shock of adrenaline.
