Struthers High School Senior Class held its annual Student vs. Faculty Game on March 20th at the Struthers High School Fieldhouse.
The student team was open to any senior athletes who signed up with Mrs. Mickler. Teachers were invited to play on the faculty team. Tickets costed $5 for adults and $3 for students. The teachers tried to keep up with the students, but the students ended up winning with a score of 71-64.
Mr. Garcar, a teacher at the High School, played on the faculty team and believes he could’ve done better.
“Even though the faculty lost, I still had a good time. I don’t think I played very well. I definitely think I need to practice in the offseason,” says Garcar.
Samantha Minno, Senior Class President, spent a lot of time helping Mrs. Mickler set up the basketball game by making flyers, encouraging students and teachers to sign up and by being the coach for the student team. As coach, she was proud to see her team win and made sure everyone had a chance to play.
She was pleased with the game overall and enjoyed being coach.
“I was so happy to have the opportunity to be the coach. I am not the best basketball player, so I had the time of my life on the side. I drew up a few plays that they ran and gave them great motivational speeches. I also really enjoyed how much I was rotating everybody, so they all had even playing time,” says Coach Minno.
Mrs. Mickler, organizer of the Student vs. Faculty Game, put a lot of effort into making it enjoyable for everyone, even the children at the game. She hosted the half court shots and “Chuck a Puck” which allowed anyone who participated a chance at winning Chic-Fil-A gift card, Phantoms tickets or $25 dollar gift cards.
She enjoys watching the students make memories.
Mickler says, “My favorite part of the game is watching how much fun the players have. It’s a friendly competition, but some people take it seriously. I also like how many students come out to watch the game. It’s a fun night for a good cause.”
The Faculty team wasn’t just teachers; it also featured the Mayor of Struthers, Catherine Cercone Miller, and her husband.
