State tests are a mandatory procedure for every public school in America. Opinions on these tests may fluctuate, as some see more value in them than others.
There are more draw-backs than benefits about standardized tests.
Standardized testing does not appropriately assess student progression; performance based assessments accurately measure a pupil’s growth through critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and the application of knowledge to practical situations they will engage in the real world. One of the many draw-backs of standardized testing is the usage of artificial intelligence, which will furthermore stunt students’ learning capacity as well as their emotional perception. “Increasing the use of artificial intelligence tools in assessment may continue to reduce human interaction in assessment, increase dependency on AI tools, compromise privacy, and limit our own grasp of student learning,” says NeaToday. An automated grading system does not equate to genuine human intelligence, especially due to the overwhelming amount of bias centered around the language arts writing sections. The writing portions on the state tests is unfairly partial to a certain side of the argument; this not only gives students less of an opportunity to support their argument if they do not agree with the preferred argument in the text, but it encourages them to regurgitate information rather than thinking for themselves.
Similarly enough, not all state-testing is ridiculous; although, there are very few boons. AI based grading is cost efficient and often saves the government millions of dollars each year. Unfortunately, the state test is not monitored by human beings, leaving the tests themselves to be rather useless in dictating a student’s intellectual value. More often than not colleges rarely determine a person’s eligibility, and they opt for accumulated GPA’s and ACT/SAT scores.
To properly gain the collective worth of an individual, these tests need to be abolished entirely. Other methods of gathering this information would be leagues more beneficial than America’s current solution. They may also aid in stopping the decline of overall global intelligence.
Performance-based assessments are a suitable method to accurately measure individual value, and progress may strengthen, yielding fortunate results.
