It’s not completely uncommon to see violent situations involving schools. The best way to handle these situations is to get everyone out of harm’s way. The best way to do that is to reduce the amount of risk in these situations.
School teachers shouldn’t carry firearms.
There are multiple reasons why teachers shouldn’t carry firearms in school. For starters, teachers should not be forced to complete an action that puts themselves at risk. When it comes to violent acts towards a school environment, that’s where law enforcement comes into play. Another reason teachers shouldn’t carry firearms is for a more kid-friendly environment. When a teacher is at school, they are surrounded by children and shouldn’t have something that can put not only themselves in danger but everyone else. The less risk at the building the better chance the parents will send their child to school. Another reason is the placement of the weapon. Leaving it in others’ reach is a possibility whether it’s an accident or not. With firearms in school, they should be locked up, but even if it still leaves the risk of someone else getting a hold of it. Many people are afraid of weapons and it shouldn’t be brought into a school setting. According to “Arming Teachers Introduces New Risks Into Schools” it states, “Parents, educators, and schoolchildren alike are frightened by the gun violence occurring in American schools and are seeking meaningful action to keep our communities safe.”
People might say that teachers carrying firearms can help the safety of students. This is true as long as the teacher has proper training and even then it’s still a risk. Not allowing teachers to maintain a weapon in the school environment does have its positives and negatives, but the negatives outweigh the positives. It’s possible to keep the classrooms safe without firearms.
In order to keep the classrooms safe, all schools should limit the amount of weapons being carried on school grounds. There are more proper ways to keep the classrooms safe, such as practicing lock down drills, paying attention to who’s coming in and who’s going out and lastly being ready to notify law enforcement.
With all things considered, teachers carrying firearms does provide benefits but not enough to outweigh the negatives. The school environment is better the less weapons that are nearby. A teacher not carrying weapons overall helps the safety and protection of the students, while maintaining a kid friendly environment.
