While some consider school to be awfully boring, often draining and mentally exhausting, it is actually necessary for certain skills aside from education.
School is a necessity for socialization skills, such as social cues, body language and even more emotional things like empathy.
Public schools, especially in America are known for their reputations of safety concerns, sports and even low test averages. While this partially may be true, public schools are essential for children to learn and adapt to modern social standards. “How Private Schooling vs. Public Influences Students’ Future Family Lives” states “Public schools provide a wider, more varied social environment due to their larger student bodies and diversity. This environment exposes students to a broader range of personalities, viewpoints and life experiences, which can contribute to the development of resilience and adaptability in social settings.” This explains that due to the variety and diversity of students, with public schools in the US averaging out to about 750-850 students, kids learn different types of skills and communication aside from the material taught in classes.
Some people, most parents and or adults believe that homeschooling is the better option, due to its flexible schedule, escape from bullying/toxic environments and maybe even for safety reasons. While this could make sense in most cases or maybe just in the moment, doing this long term can have detrimental effects on students.
Parents need to begin looking out for their children, especially down the road. The children are our future, and if we don’t set them up for success, we’re only failing the generations to come.
In sum, public schooling is an essential building block of a child’s life. Students deserve the best education there is and that should also come with life skills- not just core classes.
