Although attending school 5 days a week serves a purpose, there are some benefits if the school days per week were lowered. Less days of school a week would help students be able to delegate time to other places on those days.
School weeks should be shortened.
There are many reasons that vary on why school weeks should be shortened. For starters, if there is even one less day of school per week it would provide students with so much extra time to do something that they need to. This could help with working, catching up on school work, sports, etc. Shortened school weeks would also help students with engagement and retention. When a student has to attend school a lower amount of times a week, it would help the student become more engaged and willing to learn. For most students, they get burned out from learning, which is why shortened school weeks would help engagement and retention, causing the students to perform better. A shortened school week could also reduce the school’s spending. Whether it’s decreasing the school week by one day or two, the school will be saving money. Although it probably wouldn’t help much, not having to pay for transportation, buses, and many other resources for a day would help saving. According to “Pros and Cons of a Four-Day School Week” it states, “Another benefit of a four-day school week is that it could help reduce transportation costs for school districts. With one less day of school, schools could save money on buses, fuel, and other expenses associated with transportation.” The schools would be able to spend the money elsewhere or save it.
People might say if the school’s weeks were shortened, students wouldn’t have as many school days. In order to have shortened school weeks, some sacrifices are going to have to be made. Although sacrifices would be being made, there are solutions that can make shortened weeks manageable.
In order to make these shortened school weeks manageable, the school year would have to be lengthened. This could be as simple as extending the school year by a month or taking away days that are given during breaks. For example, instead of two weeks for Christmas break it could be a week long.
With all things considered, shortening school weeks would be a sacrifice, but it’s a sacrifice schools should take. It would help with funding and saving as a whole. It would also help with academic success, and it would overall provide the students and teachers with more free time that could be used however they want.
