Mr. Dailey’s American History classes held a coin drive for the first half of December at Struthers High school for various charities.
Kevin Dailey, a teacher at Struthers High School, organized a coin drive for each of his American History classes. He has 4 classes of American History, each with a different charity that they are raising money for.
He decided to start the coin drive because of the concerns that students shared.
“There were a lot of students asking about how the SNAP program was being cut due to the government shutdown. Since there was a lot of food insecurity I thought why not give an opportunity for the students to give back to the community,” says Dailey.
Brooke Lane, a student in one of Mr. Dailey’s history classes, enjoys doing the coin drive. Her class chose “New Lease On Life” as their charity which is an animal shelter located in Struthers. As co-captain of the coin drive, she made posters in order to advertise her charity.
She had fun promoting her charity and receiving donations.
Lane says, “My favorite part was probably getting to help make the posters, and then seeing them hung up in the hallways. Also, seeing people come into our class just to donate to us.”
All 4 classes in total made $539.99 during the coin drive. Throughout the school day, teachers and students were allowed to go into Mr. Dailey’s room and donate to the charity that they wanted to support. No one was obligated to do it and this coin drive wasn’t for a grade; it was just that Mr. Dailey wanted to educate his students on giving back to the community.
Lane feels that the coin drive was successful and fun.
“I think it went very well. We have raised lots of money, and I enjoyed it,” says the student.
