Struthers High School’s Medical Careers club members sold candy grams to raise money for presents for the patients at the Akron Children’s Hospital for the holiday season.
Candy grams are a token of love and appreciation for students to send one another. These gifts consist of a candy cane with a nice card attached to it. The students are allowed to write something on the card along with who it’s from and who it’s to.
Teacher and club advisor Stephanie Mickler is a big fan of this heartwarming tradition.
“The money collected is used to buy presents for Akron Children’s Hospital patients. Hospital stays can be scary, so it’s nice to let them know people are thinking of them during a difficult time,” says Mickler.
This event gets much less attention than the other donation drives, raffles or incentives held by SHS. This is unfortunate because the kids in these hospitals feel very alone during the holidays, so hopes are held that this tradition gains more popularity in the next few years.
Mickler aims to gain more support from students than in previous years.
Mickler says, “I wish they did have a little more attention, so we have more to give to the hospital.”
Akron Children’s holds many donation drives throughout the year, but the holiday season is very important to the cause. Considering the hospital is just for children it is important to keep the spark alive during the holidays; that can change a sick child’s entire memory of their childhood.
Mickler does not plan on stopping this tradition any time soon.
“No matter the amount made, I think it’s definitely a worthwhile cause to continue,” says Mickler.
