In the majority of high schools, many students work a part time job that takes up a lot of their time. This leaves slim to no time for students to do any extra school work that needs done.
High school students should have a job, only if they can handle it.
Although working a part time job can interfere with a students academic performance, it can also be very valuable for the student to work a part time job. Firstly, many high school students rely on their parents for everything financially, so getting a job will help with the student being able to get whatever they need or want with their own money. It also teaches a student how to properly manage their time, because with school and work the student has slim time to do whatever they need to do, so they have to learn how to budget their time. Having a job is also a good way for the teenagers to get work experience to better help them prepare for their future careers. According to “Yes/No: Should High School Students have a Job?” by Dani Fincher and Cash Alexander, “Moreover, students are given the choice on where to use their money whether it be for personal use, family, or saving up to pursue education at community college or 4 four-year universities. Having options and control helps teach students how to allocate or distribute income evenly so that they are less likely to run into financial problems in the future.” Having a job not only helps in the moment but also helps when it comes to being financially stable while being a grown adult.
Some people believe that high school students shouldn’t hold a part time job because it could affect their academic performance. This is true; holding a job while being in school can affect the students’ academics, but it’s on the students to accomplish both. If a student knows they are struggling in school, they should know not to have a job because it’ll make them struggle even more. With holding a job, the student is going to have to take more accountability and responsibility in order to be successful in both.
Employers that are hiring high school students could change a few things. First, the employer can check the students grades and attendance every now and then to ensure their job isn’t affecting academics. This will limit students with jobs that are not performing well in school.
To sum it all up, students should have a part time job if it’s not affecting the student’s academic performance. Having a job helps students pay for things and helps them obtain skills in order to be successful.
