Researchers from the Social Media Victims Law Center reached out to the public on Thursday, October 2, 2025, about the detrimental effects of social media through an article.
It’s most agreeable that teens, as do other age groups, spend countless hours scrolling through social media. The negative impact heavily outweighs the positive.
Consequences of internet over-consumption include: loneliness, depression, seeking validation, doubts of self worth, lower confidence and feelings of inadequacy. According to the Social Media Victims Law Center, research reveals that the most affected group would be teen girls between the ages of ten and fourteen. Consistent with the article’s stance, certain applications target insecure adolescents as a means of expanding revenue. “For instance, Facebook has been pinpointed as a social networking site that attracts adolescents with lower self-esteem yet worsens the problem as the teens engage in higher levels of social comparison,” says The Social Media Victims Law Center. The group of teenagers today are already subjected to less self awareness, extreme sensitivity and impeccable standards. Many young adults are exposed to content that depicts what they should be and what deems them to fit the norm. The internet amplifies this effect by an extreme.
Contrary to the downfall of social networking–if used methodically–it can connect people to astonishing opportunities, provide information and can create communities. Unfortunately, the downside simply cannot be ignored; the worthwhile side of social networking is too miniscule compared to the amount of individuals who’ve been impaired by it.
It seems to be the issue resides in the excessive usage of it, if not for the kind of content being exposed. To prevent this, people could start developing hobbies, go outside more, filter their feed to be more positive and resourceful and so forth. By doing so, it could increase serotonin levels and overall contentness within a person.
Several sources claim this to be true, and research can back this stance in multiple aspects. Before social media became dominant, many groups of people were much more elated, interactive with one another and spent time outdoors regularly.
