Netflix brought to screens its film about an Australian romance, “A Perfect Pairing,” on May 19, 2022.
“A Perfect Pairing” was written by Elizabeth Hackett and Hilary Galanoy and directed by Stuart McDonald. This film follows a young entrepreneur, Lola (Victoria Justice), on her venture to Australia after she quits her job to fulfill her personal dreams. She goes to attempt to get her new wine company’s first client. However, it proves to be a bit difficult to win them over. As she attempts to do this, sparks begin to fly between the station manager training her, Max Vaughn (Adam Demos), to work on the family’s sheep farm. As tensions and emotions run high, Lola realizes she found more than she anticipated when she first decided to come to Australia.
One enjoyable factor about this film is the friendships that Lola makes along her journey in Australia. At first, Lola was the outsider because she was so used to the American way of life, such as always being on her phone, doing her makeup, her hair, etc. But, once she meets the girls she is bunking with in her room, she learns fast that the Australian way is completely different. As the days go by, Lola begins to make friends with the other girls, even though they are not similar in the slightest. By the end of the movie, Lola has made some new lifelong friends, and maybe even a new lifelong boyfriend.
Something that turned me away from this movie, though, was the cringe factor. Now it was a PG movie, but audiences were hoping for a more mature storyline. The main character, Lola, had some moments that belonged more on Disney Channel or Nickelodeon than Netflix. It was good that people of all ages were able to watch and enjoy this movie, but for the older audiences, it did make it hard for it to be their new favorite movie. Although the movie was good overall, this did change how audiences felt about it for sure.
“A Perfect Pairing” portrayed a love story that was unexpected and fresh. Out of a lot of the Netflix romance movies, this stood out because it did take place in Australia. The Australian-American love story made viewers excited for something new to come onto Netflix. It is rated PG but still is easily watchable for more mature audiences. It receives a solid 3.5 star rating, shows all viewers that doing things for yourself can be refreshing, and that trying new things is a perfectly good way to live.
