The New York Yankees withstood a crazy ninth-inning rally to beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 on Tuesday night, April 28th, 2026, which was highlighted by a masterclass of a pitching performance by Yankees phenom Cam Schlittler.
The win bolstered the Yankees to their tenth win in eleven games which is now good enough for first place in the American League. For the Rangers, they had the chance to climb back to .500 but they instead lost their second straight as their offense struggled to figure out the Yankees arms.
Cam Schlittler outpitched three-time Cy Young award winner Jacob DeGrom; he tossed six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and only allowed three hits. This performance lowered Schlittler’s ERA to an unbelievable 1.51 across 41.2 innings.
Schlittler gave praise after the game, crediting his catcher and elite defense behind him.
“Just being in the zone making good pitches, defense was great behind me, so just having confidence to go out there and attack,” he said.
Schlittler’s poise on the big stage didn’t surprise Yankees Manager Aaron Boone.
Boone praised his ability to make stuff happen under pressure.
“He’s got a great demeanor about him. He’s very even keeled and very adaptable,” he said.
The duel lived up to the hype it was given, as DeGrom only allowed one run over six innings pitched, however, was outshined by Schlittler, who hasn’t allowed a run or a walk in a historic stretch. Rangers Manager Skip Schumaker noted that Schlittler’s slide was working perfectly with his fastball, and that it simply silenced Texas’ offense.
Schlittler’s ability to keep composure in high pressure situations stood out to the clubhouse leader, who highlighted the pitcher’s ability.
“He flat out did something real special, and it’s nothing new, it’s what he does every time out,” said Yankees captain and outfielder Aaron Judge.
The Yankees added some insurance with Judges’ 12th homerun of the year; the captain is swinging it this year, along with first baseman Ben Rice. They have already combined for 22 homeruns on the season.
This game brings the Yankees to their 20th win of the season, and they have some great momentum and have won a couple consecutive series. They are atop the American League and probably the hottest team in baseball. The Rangers, on the other hand, are searching for answers as their offense went cold and couldn’t produce.
