After losing their starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes in week 15 to an ACL tear, The Chiefs made a shocking move in free agency and got a steal by picking up quarterback Justin Fields from the Jets.
The New York Jets traded for quarterback Geno Smith that leaves Fields out of the talk but not long. The Jets would receive a trade from the Kansas City Chiefs to acquire Fields and a 2027 6th round pick. By doing so this gives New York a big chance to bring in more and better guys to help the team. Fields contract was a huge chunk of their money (20 million) but if they would have kept him they would be paying him even more money (23 million).
Chiefs head coach Andy reid talks about Mahomes rehab situation.
“He spends a ton of time here, seven hours a day,” Reid said then of Mahomes. “He’s in there cranking away and making progress every day. It’s great to see. Julie grinds on him and makes sure he stays on task and challenges him. He keeps showing up. That’s about half the battle on these things when you have these injuries.
Justin Fields went 2-7 as a starter with the jets and with a qbr of (37.3) one of the worst in the league. He finished with 7 touchdown passes, 1 interception and 1,259 passing yards, only putting up 505 yards in his last five starts. In late October when Fields got hurt and only played a numerous of games while head coach Woody Johnson was blaming Justin for their 0-7 start.
Jets head coach Woody Johnson describes how it was with fields.
“It’s hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that he’s got,” Johnson said. “I mean, he has ability, but something just is not jiving. … If we can just complete a pass, it would look good.”
Even with all the critics, Justin shrugged it off with paying no attention. After being benched with other quarterback Aaron Glenn he got to learn a little more but that’s when he was done putting up with this treatment. Fields responded with his best game of the season, throwing for 244 yards in a comeback win over the Cincinnati Bengals. But it was all downhill from there.
Justin Fields shows his excitement about joining a new team for a fresh start.
“no-pressure exchange” to learn under Andy Reid. He publicly stated, “Excited to be here; excited to get to work. Let’s go, Chiefs Kingdom,”
