The lights were bright in LA on February 26 as the Lakers and Clippers faced off in another rivalry.
With playoff positioning tightening in the western Conference, both teams came into the match needing a win to keep momentum heading into the final stretch.
The Lakers came out strong in the first quarter scoring 41 points, pushing the pace and attacking the paint early. Their defense forced multiple turnovers turning them into fast break points.
However, the Clippers didn’t stay quiet for long.
“We knew this was going to be a fight,” Lebron James said, “It’s always intense when we play them.”
The Clippers responded in the second quarter scoring 35 points with strong three-pointing and together defense. By halftime, the game was close with both teams trading baskets and momentum.
In the second half, the rivalry energy reached another level.
“Our focus was just to stay locked in and finish,” Tyronn Lue said.
The Lakers leaned on Luka Doncic and James late in the fourth quarter with them combining for 51 points, executing in isolation plays and making big free throws. A huge defensive stop in the final minute sealed the win.
When the final buzzer sounded, it was clear this game meant more than just another regular season game.
“We wanted this one,” Smart said. “It’s about pride.”
The victory gave the Lakers an important boost in the standings while the Clippers were left regrouping after a hard fought loss.
