Struthers varsity girls’ basketball team played against Lowellville’s girls team on February 17th at their home gym to determine who was the better team with an ending score of 55-42.
This game was a key factor in determining whether or not Stuthers was going to break their 6 game losing streak and lower Lowellville’s rank.
The Lady Cats basketball record after this game was 3-19. Throughout the game they had many ups and downs, yet they came to a point and locked in. This game to all of the Lady Cats will be remembered as the game that lost their losing streak.
Sophomore, Jordyn Durst, gives a rundown of the game and its amazing qualities.
“At the beginning of the first quarter, we were down 1-6 but at the end of the first quarter we were up 12-9. By the end of the second quarter, we gained an even bigger lead with the score being 20-9. At this point we were all determined to win. In the third quarter, the score to start was 24-15, and by the end of the third quarter the score was 37-30, we didn’t give up and in the fourth quarter we finished the game 55-42,” says Durst.
With being determined from catching a lead, the Lady Cats had been determined to keep their strengths pushing them forward. They may have had some weakness including simple turnovers and rushing their passes to one another. But overall their strengths had to obtain their win.
The athlete shared the team’s strengths.
“We did a great job passing the ball and Natalie Wolkow did a great job shooting that game,” says Durst.
While the Lady Cats team had been doing well, so had the other team. They also had weaknesses which included not guarding the paint well. But Lowellville had been a complicated team to play but the Lady Cats overcame and got a win.
Durst recognizes the opposing team’s strengths.
Durst says, “They had some good three point shooters and when they got hot and we didn’t close out that hurt us.”
The Lady Cats had overall thought this game was amazing and one of their most memorable ones as a team.
“It was a very fun game. We did what needed to be done to win, and we didn’t give up even in the first quarter when we were losing. I think that’s the reason we won, because we didn’t give up. It was the last home game for the seniors so winning it I bet meant a lot to them,” said the athlete.
