As the stats continue to stack up for Browns LB Carson Schwesinger, he has been named Defensive Rookie of the month for November.
Schwesinger leads all defensive rookies with 39 tackles and 6 tackles for a loss despite only playing a few games.
Coming out of high school, Schwesinger had zero offers to play at any schools, so he ended up going to UCLA for bioengineering. Schwesinger didn’t have plans to play college football, but when he was at UCLA he then decided to make that change and try out as a walk-on player. As his football career took off to an amazing start, he ended up getting highlighted as one of the top linebackers in college football.
Browns LB coach Jason Tarver discusses Schwesinger mentality.
“Carson really does a really good job of being able to focus on each play and making the next play his best play,” Tarver said. “It’s one of the things that I’ve said before, but that’s usually where a rookie will struggle, where he is worried about what he just did or hangs onto it. He figures it out, ask great questions, runs to the ball.”
In 2024, Schwesinger led the Big 10 in tackles with 163. He has earned first team all American honors and the Butkus award. After an amazing college career, Schwesinger’s stats kept piling up which would boost him to the top above everyone and end with 163 total tackles, 11 TFL, 5 sacks and 2 interceptions in only 38 games. While going crazy on the football field, Schwesinger still had bioengineering class, but that wasn’t a match and he crushed it with high standards.
Browns LB coach Jason Tarver shares a bond with Schwesinger over bioengineering.
“There was a chance when I was at UCLA that I would’ve taught some of his classes when I was in graduate school, which is really crazy,” Tarver said during Brown’s minicamp on June 12.
Now with the 33rd pick in the 2025 NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns select Schwesinger. After getting drafted by the Browns in the 2nd round, his job and role has become a huge part in the defence. In week 11 vs the Ravens, Schwesinger would go on to have the biggest game of his season with a breakout of 11 tackles, 2 TFL and 1 interception. This game would put Schwesinger over the top of everyone as the best rookie linebacker in the NFL for the month of November.
Defensive end Myles Garrett explains how good he really is as a rookie.
“Carson, especially as a rookie, he’s the guy. If it’s rookie of the year, I don’t think there’s anyone ahead of him currently,” Garrett said on Nov. 16.
