Ten athletes signed a contract on Tuesday, November 18 to play college baseball at Youngstown State University for the 2027 spring season.
It takes more than just being able to catch or throw a ball when it comes to playing for a Division 1 program such as YSU. These different athletes stand out no matter where they are playing at or who they are playing against. These guys lead their class with stats in each of their states and have a pretty big name in their playing region. The best part is they all get to come together to try and make this program better again.
Head Coach of YSU Baseball Trevor Charpie is ready for this class to hit campus and start their college careers.
“We’re incredibly excited to officially welcome this outstanding group of student-athletes to the Youngstown State baseball program. Each of these young men embodies the qualities we look for – hard work, character, competitiveness, and a genuine love for the game,” said Coach Charpie.
One of the 10 that really stick out more than the rest is the hometown signee Braydon Songer. Songer is a senior at Hubbard High school and will be signing to YSU to fill a right-handed pitching position. Songer hopes to try and hit during his college career and get some infield reps at short stop, a position where he currently plays. He is a standout 3-sport athlete which is another reason Coach Charpie showed so much interest in him. College rosters always need pitching and–with Songer being so athletic–he will fit in just fine.
Coach Charpie has high hopes for Songer to get on campus next year and get right to work.
“He comes from winning programs, a strong family and environments that have prepared him to succeed both on and off the field,” said the Head Coach.
The YSU baseball program has struggled for the last decade with their last conference championship being in 2014. The coaching staff has high expectations for these fresh 10 along with the 15 that signed for this upcoming season to turn this program around. YSU has made a huge name for themselves for football this past season, and they have the same plans for baseball. Watching this young team develop and continue to play America’s past time is something special. Get your tickets or watch online because these next two seasons will be remarkable for the Youngstown State Penguins baseball organization.
Charpie is very confident in the skill and talent they will be able to display on the field in the next few years in hopes of another conference championship.
“This group represents a strong mix of skill sets that will help elevate our team in all areas,” said Charpie.
