“The Grinch” (2018) was released on November 9, 2018, as a remake of the original “Grinch.” The remaking of it was located in Paris, France, and it was created to build a more family-friendly atmosphere, and build a deeper story that still represents the first one.
The first “Grinch,” made in 2000, is a storyline about a fictional, green character who hates Christmas and tries to ruin it for the “Whos” that live in Whoville. It is said that his heart is “3 sizes too small.” He lives at the top of a mountain (3,000 feet up), and no one wants to go near it. As the movie goes on, Cindy Lou Who is getting mail, sees the Grinch hiding, so no one sees him and gets frightened. She ended up falling into the packaging machine and was screaming for help. The Grinch had helped her, and she was very grateful. No matter what was said about him or what she heard, she saw something in him that no one else did. The movie continued on, and she hiked up the mountain to visit the Grinch and ask him to go to the Whoville Christmas Cheer Mister. She knocked on the door, but there was no answer. She ended up going in anyway; where she saw the Grinch making a ton of noise, so he didn’t hear her enter. He tries to scare her away, but she just thinks it’s funny. She invites him to the cheermister, and he’s hesitant about going but ends up going anyway. The Whos didn’t want him there, and it started off okay but then it went downhill. He ends up leaving upset, and Cindy Lou cried because she just wanted him to feel included. He made a plan up until Christmas Eve to steal the Whos’ Christmas. He ended up stealing everything from houses, until he got to the last one, where he went to steal the Christmas tree, and Cindy Lou who saw him. She didn’t know it was the Grinch; she thought it was Santa. She asked what he was doing with their tree, and he said he was going to fix a light and he would bring it back in the morning. When the Whos woke up on Christmas, everything was gone. The Grinch thought it would upset them, but they didn’t mind. They got together and held hands in a circle and started singing. They believed that Christmas wasn’t just about the presents, but spending time together. The Grinch felt upset by this, and his heart grew. He ended up going back with all their stuff and admitting to what he did, and they forgave him and invited him to their Christmas dinner. They all made up and had a wonderful time.
The 2018 remastered version is an animated version that isn’t as serious. It’s more laid back, comedic and family-friendly. It has a more understandable story line for children. It starts with showing Whoville at Christmas time, then moving up the mountain to the Grinch’s lair. His alarm clock starts going off with Christmas songs, and he keeps trying to turn it off, but it won’t. He ends up knocking it to the bottom of his lair. It then shows the process of the Grinch getting ready for the day, with his dog Max. He goes down to the dining room to eat, and all that’s on his plate is a single bean. He goes looking through the cabinets for the food he stashed specifically, so he wouldn’t have to go down to Whoville during Christmas time. He ends up having to go anyway and brings Max with him. He tells Max not to talk to anyone or look at anyone. On the way to the store, he sees a kid building a snowman, but isn’t able to reach the nose. He thinks the Grinch is going to help him but he ends up knocking over the snowman. He then gets chased around by an acapella group singing Christmas songs all the way to the store. When he finally gets to the store, he starts knocking everything into his cart. As he’s walking back, Cindy Lou is going to the mail man to give him her letter to Santa. She tells her mom it’s very important, and she rushes to get to the mail man and ends up landing on the Grinch after a sledding incident. The Grinch gets irritated with her and tells her to watch where she’s going. He ends up finally getting to go home. Cindy Lou tells her friends that she wants to catch Santa this year because her really important wish was something for her mom. They end up setting up a big plan to catch him. When Christmas Eve finally comes, the Grinch gets caught, but Cindy Lou believes it’s Santa and ends up talking to her for a second and then he leaves. He ends up feeling a little guilty and replaying what Cindy Lou had said. When he saw everyone standing around together and singing, he brought their stuff back. Later, Cindy Lou had invited him to their dinner. He came, and they all enjoyed him being there. He enjoyed being there himself.
An enjoyable factor of this movie was the storyline. It kept the same kind of backstory, but still had its differences. It made it more comedic and fun. It made it so it wasn’t exactly the same as the first, and it made it less predictable. There were events that happened in the remastered version that never happened in the first that made it more enjoyable, like when the Grinch got stuck in Cindy Lou’s trap. It didn’t happen in the first movie but made audiences laugh, and they never would’ve guessed that happened. It’s not predictable.
Another factor is the animations. Making animations are difficult, and some turn out not too good and take a while. This took only 2 years, and it looks amazing. It’s not exactly something you would see in real life, but it still looks really good. The movie was made by using 3D cgi by illumination. It tells a story even though it’s not super realistic. They made everything using a variety of computer programs and specialized hair systems. They put in a lot of work to make it as fun as possible.
The movie should get a 4 out of 5 because it definitely isn’t going to be for everyone, but people with families and young children will definitely like it. Even people who like animated, shorter movies would enjoy it. It has a variety of entertainment, some being comedy, a storyline, emotions and more.
