“BARBIE” BREAKS RECORDS AS HIGHEST GROSSING FILM OF 2023

“BARBIE” BREAKS RECORDS AS HIGHEST GROSSING FILM OF 2023

The multi-award winning movie “Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig, hit theaters on July 21, 2023, gaining a strong 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

This film stars some of the most notable talents from across the globe. Featuring  Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the story takes audiences through an emotional adventure of what it truly means to be a woman and the hardships they face throughout life. The film explores the concept of patriarchy as Ken tries to bring it into Barbie Land.

The acting in this movie is incredible. Robbie delivers a fantastic performance as Barbie discovers parts of herself she never knew existed. Another notable role is America Ferrera’s Gloria. She perfectly portrays the struggles of a mother trying to connect with her teenage daughter Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt). One of the most moving parts of the film is the speech Gloria gives to help snap all of the Barbies in Barbie Land out of their patriarchal depression caused by the Kens. This ultimately saves Barbie Land and helps Barbie discover what she truly is and wants: to be human.

The soundtrack to this movie is another aspect that just adds so much depth to it. Lizzo’s “Pink” starts it off perfectly, describing how a stereotypical morning goes for Barbie, over time falling apart as her world begins to change. Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” sets off the perfect vibe for her fun night with the other Barbies. Most notable of all is Billie Eilish’s Oscar-winning song “What Was I Made For?” This song is basically the theme of the film. It plays briefly throughout the movie, encapsulating Barbie’s internal struggles as she changes throughout life. It all leads up to her overall realization that she doesn’t want to be perfect anymore; she just wants to be human.

In conclusion, this film deserves a 10/10 for its impeccable acting, perfectly fitting soundtrack and incredibly moving message.
