The older Netflix series You stars actors like Penn Badgley as the main character. The show is about an intelligent young man that gets very obsessive.
In the start of the series, we are shown that Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is a book enthusiast and inherited a book store from the previous owner. Joe’s back story was that his mother abandoned him, leading him to be put into foster care. Joe had a very rough childhood, often being abused by the people who took him in, Ivan Mooney (Mark Blum) was the bookstore owner. Joe meets the love of his life, Beck (Elizabeth Lail) while working in the front of the bookstore, and he just knew he couldn’t let her go. He starts stalking her, and his stalking ends up saving her lifE. She recognized him but she was manipulated into thinking it was just a coincident meeting with him at the train station. A few weeks later they ended up dating, and Beck just thinks it was a lucky moment that Joe was the one to save her.
Goldberg is the bad guy in this series. This series portrays the villain as the main character very well. Throughout the show, the audience is rooting for Joe, the anticipation of hoping he doesn’t get caught raises suspense. The advancement in suspense is extremely well done; each scene builds more and more suspense. Joe almost gets caught a few times, but each time he was able to get rid of the problem.
The plot twists come in left and right; every episode has some sort of a plot twist to it. Watching Joe go from being the victim to the villain is extremely fun to see. Seeing Joe start out as a weak, nerdy bookstore clerk to being a masterminded villain all within the first few episodes was not anticipated. At one point, Beck begins to catch onto Joe and investigates him and his past very intensely. Joe being the mastermind he is, had already covered up his past very well, in case a day like this would come.
Overall, this series gets a 7.5/10 rating due to the suspenseful nature of the show. One thing that would make the series better is the setting of the show.
