Coffee is a beverage teachers consume like no other. They use the caffeinated beverage as an avenue to get themselves through the day. Today we will explore the nuances of the educators’ greatest addiction.
Every teacher that had been surveyed had been a fan of pure, black coffee. The affordability and efficiency of which catches the teachers fancy, with each cup totaling around 120 milligrams of caffeine.
Mr. Drass, a Biology teacher and wrestling coach, drinks a high amount of coffee per day, but it is seemingly the norm for the faculty here at Struthers High School.
“I tell my calorie counter app that I drink four cups a day, so I probably drink a little more than that,” said Drass.
This beverage is ingrained in teachers’ lives to the point that as the interview was occurring in the making of this article, a history teacher, Mr. Pape was making a cup of coffee as he was being surveyed. Every teacher that was surveyed displayed the fact that their withdrawal symptoms would withhold them from going even a day on the job without a cup of coffee.
Mr. Pape, a CCP history and Global studies teacher, recalled a day that he had to go without a cup of coffee.
“I was pretty exhausted that day; I felt tired, I had a bad headache, and I was probably very low energy. I try my best to prevent situations like this; that is why the very first thing I ever bought for my class room was a Keurig coffee pot,” Pape remarked.
These coffee-addicted teachers all started around the same age, which was the end of high school or start of college; it seems that these high-stress environments led to them picking up the habit. The energy boost helped them push through the stressful work load of college courses. This picked up habit has cost them vast amounts of money, an average of $500 per year.
Mr Dailey, a history teacher, tries to save as much money as he can while holding on to his addiction.
“I probably spend somewhere in the ballpark $350 a year on coffee. This is because I always look for a deal, if the cake cups are not on sale I’m not buying it. I always buy store brand coffee. For example, the last batch I purchased was 140 K cups for 40 bucks, which is enough to last me a few months,” said Dailey.
Teachers and other jobs of the sort have been battling this addiction since coffee was around, with teaching being among the top ten jobs in terms of coffee consumption. So the next time you see your teacher heating up another pot, remember that you could be like them one day.
