“THE PARENT TRAP” SHOWS POWERFUL FAMILY CONNECTION

“The Parent Trap” is a classic story that follows identical twins who meet for the first time at a summer camp and formulate a clever plan to switch places with each other. They swap to meet the parents they hadn’t met before and they later aim to reunite their divorced parents–Nick (Dennis Quaid) and Elizabeth (Natasha Richardson)–while getting rid of Nick’s new fiancee Meredith (Elaine Hendrix).

For eleven years, Nick and Elizabeth successfully raise one of the two twins without Annie and Hallie (Linday Lohan) meeting. Elizabeth raises Annie in London while Nick raises Hallie in California, but one day they coincidentally put their children in the same all girls camp in Maine for the summer. Hallie and Annie have several encounters with each other and even have a pranking war that causes chaos within the camp. The counselor decides to place the girls in the same cabin, so they are isolated from their peers. Bunking together, they discover that they are identical twins due to each keeping a torn up wedding picture of their parents. They gain excitement and each girl trains the other to act like her so that they are able to switch with one another at the end of summer. When the camp is over, the plan is put into action. Mayhem occurs while they adjust to their new environments. Their plan faces obstacles, including hiding their identities and dealing with Nick’s soon to be bride. The sisters scheme to sabotage Meredith and urge their parents to reunite. Ultimately, their efforts lead to Nick and Elizabeth rekindling their love and the family happily comes together again.

One thing done very well in “The Parent Trap” is the smooth representation of both twins by Lindsay Lohan. Through impressive acting skills and sharp camera work, each twin has their own personality and distinct character  traits, making them feel like they are two separate people. The interactions between the sisters appears natural and enhances the emotional depth to the story, while also capturing the humor of the story. This convincing performance by Lohan is the main reason why the film stays memorable for the audience and keeps them coming back.

The film perfectly develops the bond that grows between Hallie and Annie after they discover one another. Their relationship transforms from enemies to close allies that trust each other with their lives. The transition is portrayed with an authenticity that makes it seem like they are real sisters, making their relationship feel genuine and heartfelt. “The Parent Trap” also has amazing banter and several touching moments that focus around the connection between the entire family. The strong emotional core of the story helps the audience stay invested in the twins’ journey of fixing the broken pieces of their parents’ marriage.

“The Parent Trap” is a very enjoyable 5 star film because of its seamless blend of humor and heartfelt moments. The classic movie finds a perfect balance between comedy and emotional depth.
