“The Princess Diaries” was directed by Garry Marshall and was released on August 3, 2001. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 55 minutes.
“The Princess Diaries” is based on the book series written by Meg Cabot follows 15 year old Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) finding out she’s the heir to the throne of Genovia. At first she wants nothing to do with it because she’s shy and wants to seem invisible to others. As she develops her relationship with her grandma, Queen of Genovia (Julie Andrews) she transforms into a princess. Mia must decide if she wants to rule the country while handling her drama at school.
Although the movie was successful, the makeover Mia received is highly criticized. The movie made it seem like in order to be a princess you need to be pretty. They made Mia’s hair straight, removed her glasses and put makeup on her. This gives the audience the wrong impression and believe your looks contribute to your success.
“The Princess Diaries” isn’t considered a good book adaptation. In the movie, Mia’s relationship with her father is different. In the book, her father is alive but distant whereas in the movie he passed away. In the book, there is more diversity with the characters, but in the movie they took that away. If you compare the movie to the book, it can be disappointing especially to people who love the books.
In conclusion, the movie is recommended to all ages who enjoy family/comedy movies.
