Genevieve Purcell is a sophomore at Struthers High School. She is involved in cheerleading. This is the athlete’s second year cheering for the high school and 1st year on the varsity team.
Purcell got her inspiration to start cheering from her mom, who was a cheerleader in the past. The athlete has been cheering since she was 6 years old. She started cheering for the Struthers Hardhats in 1st grade. Eventually started cheering for the Struthers Wildcats in 7th grade.
Purcell feels that everyone should try cheerleading because it’s amazing if you put in the effort.
“It is something I grew to really enjoy, and you will too as long as you are willing to put the work and dedication into it,” says the athlete.
Being a cheerleader always keeps the student busy. She has to focus on maintaining her good grades and dedicate time to cheerleading as well. The best way Purcell splits her time is to prioritize the important things like school. She puts cheer second leaving herself with down time, so she doesn’t wear herself out.
The athlete feels that the best way to improve is to push yourself to try different and challenging skills.
“You only improve if you keep trying new things and practicing, and when I learn a new skill, I always feel proud of myself and feel stronger,” says Purcell.
Purcell’s favorite thing about cheerleading is the friendships she has made along the way. Being on a squad like hers, the athlete has become close with her teammates. Cheering has grown Purcell as a person, and it has made her more comfortable with the people she is closest to.
The student has had thoughts of continuing cheerleading after high school, but there is a lot to think about.
“I know I’ll be very focused on my classes, and it’s a matter of commitment and pressure. I absolutely would love to pursue cheer in college, but I might have lots of other priorities or even newfound interests,” she says.
