Livia Waback is a junior of Struthers High School who takes pride in her volunteer work. She volunteers through Interact club, as well as Future Teachers Club and Medical Careers Club–she is secretary of both of those.
Waback has a good balance with her volunteer work; she chooses not to volunteer at every chance she gets so it works out well. When she hears about a good opportunity, she chooses to work her schedule around it, so she can make the best of it. Volunteering also gives her an opportunity to see her friends, Giavanna Smiley and Riley Guy.
Waback finds volunteering as an outlet to assist others and develop her future career.
“I really just like having something to do, and helping people is my favorite thing to do; my main goal in my future career is to help people,” says Waback
Waback volunteers because of the chances it brings and how it helps other people. She likes knowing how much she is doing for the community. Another added bonus is the people she meets are very kind. There was a time where she met a little girl that was very funny and sweet, which highly improved her volunteering experience.
Waback didn’t have much motivation during high school but volunteering produced something to look forward to.
“I’ve never really been passionate about anything in school or for my future, but I think volunteering in high school gave me something to be passionate about,” says Waback.
She hasn’t had a specific big accomplishment in her time of volunteering, but she has been very proud of herself this far. When she is volunteering, she chooses to take a more ‘hands-on role’ rather than being in the background. A volunteer opportunity that the student loves to work and take charge at is the Oktoberfest where Sturthers runs a cinnamon roll stand.
Waback finds that she influences people while volunteering, especially at special events.
“When I volunteer for things like the “Build-a-Bed” project I do think my work impacts people, as well as with the kids at the elementary school,” says Waback.
Waback will continue to volunteer after high school; it’s something that she talks about constantly. Educationally, she will be studying speech pathology/therapy at an undecided college.
