“The Hunger Games” is a worldwide phenomenon and is a dystopian story set in Panem. The Capitol sends one boy and one girl from each of the 12 districts into a fight to the death.
“The Hunger Games” follows a teenage girl named Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who is sent into the Hunger Games after volunteering to save her sister. She has to navigate new relationships and how to stay alive to make it back to her home and family. She ends up being in a fake relationship with Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) to please the Capitol and President Snow (Donald Sutherland). She is mentored by Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson), who is a previous victor of the Hunger Games. In the end, both Katniss and Peeta are named victors, and their stories continue on throughout the rest of the series.
Katniss finds strong relationships during her time affiliated with the Hunger Games. She meets Peeta, which starts off with a fake relationship so the audience is thrilled. However, as time goes on, they start to actually fall in love and their relationship grows more. Hymitch becomes a father-figure for Katniss and becomes a trustworthy mentor and friend. Also, the main person in her life is her sister, Prim Everdeen (Willow Shields), who she fights for throughout the story. Prim gives Katniss a reason to stay alive and make it back home.
The themes of “The Hunger Games” are economic inequality, having hope and love and family. Panem is divided between the wealthy people who support the Capitol and the 12 districts. The districts were split apart from the rest of Panem after a rebellion years ago, and the people are still suffering with the consequences. Katniss fights for her family, who are the only people she knows she truly loves. Also, having hope helped save the people of Panem when they were at their lowest.
“The Hunger Games” is a 5/5 star rating movie. It’s thrilling for viewers; it’s fast paced, and the themes are deep.
