The barely known movie “The Count of Monte Cristo” has so many unexpected plot twists. This movie is based off of a fictional story but was heavily influenced by real life events.
The start of the movie begins with a ship heading to an island which held the ex-emperor, Napoleon. The ship was considered to be treasonous by the French army, even though the crew was only heading to this island for help and treatment of their dying captain. The French army deemed the captain had passed and allowed them to be on their way, but within this time frame the main character Edmond Dantès (Jim Caviezel) had received a letter directly from Napoleon. Napoleon directed Edmond Dantès to show no one the letter, not even his best friend, Fernand de Morcerf (Guy Pearce), un-benonaced to them both Fernad was indeed watching from afar. After being given the letter, he heads back towards his lodging where Fernad was. Once asleep Fernand took a sneak peak at the given letter, which started the downfall of Edmond Dantès.
This movie has an insane amount of plot twists, and that’s what makes the movie interesting. The first plot twist was Edmond’s best friend betraying him, by turning him in for treason. After meeting with the judge, he gave the letter over which the judge read and deemed the letter was treasonous. Since Dantes wasn’t able to read, he was left off the hook, until the judge asked the question in which the letter belonged to. The letter belonged to the judge’s father, even though Dantes didn’t know that the judge locked him up forever. The third plot twist was when Dantes’s so-called best friend married his fiance and had a kid after the judge had given the word of his “death.” Dantes spent 13 years in prison before he escaped and spent another 3 years before he could get back to his homeland where he plotted the demise of everyone who hurt him. One of the final plot twists was Fernado’s 16-year-old-kid wasn’t his at all.
Not only is the plot twist amazing, but the character development is extraordinary as well. We watch Dantes go from having everything to losing it all in an instant. Even though he had lost everything, he somehow came back on top after many years of tragedy. After being sent to jail, he learned how to sword fight, how to read, how to even do math, which was all taught to him by another prisoner. This prisoner accidentally stumbled upon Dantes’s cell by mistake while trying to escape. After 13 years of agony, Dantes escaped and was picked up by a group of pirates after showing his amazing knife fighting skills. After 16 years, he became an extremely rich count.
