APONTE SHINES IN CHEER SPOTLIGHT

Myra Aponte is a freshman at Struthers High School. The student is involved in many school activities including Interact Club, Future Teachers Club, Medical Careers Club, Pep Club, Art Squad, Student Council, softball and cheerleading.

When Aponte was younger, she always enjoyed gymnastics and watching other girls cheer. She spent her time watching videos and movies that involved cheer and gymnastics, and it sparked her interest in cheerleading. The athlete is able to do plenty of skills, and they are all self taught.

Aponte feels that cheerleading builds character and makes her a stronger person.

“Cheer has helped me grow as a person, build strong friendships, and push myself both physically and mentally,” says the athlete.

Although cheerleading can take a lot of time and effort, it is like an escape from reality. The student is very passionate about cheering and plans on cheering throughout high school. Cheering can be difficult at times with school, but Aponte always puts her academics first.

The student believes that she has learned good time management skills and has become more accountable while juggling cheer, softball and school.

“Being involved in cheerleading has taught me how to stay organized and manage my schedule responsibly,” says Aponte.

Aponte’s cheerleading journey started 8 years ago. She started cheering in second grade in 2018. Since then, she has loved cheerleading, which is why she constantly pushes herself to get better.

The student athlete loves seeing her achievements and getting acknowledgement from others. It encourages her to keep getting better.

“I would say getting recognized by others is what keeps me motivated, knowing that others notice all of my accomplishments and hard work that I have achieved throughout the years pushes me to stay committed and continue improving,” says Aponte
