MICKLER GUIDES STUDENTS THROUGH JOURNALISM

Mrs. Mickler is a journalism and Honors English teacher at Struthers High School. Mickler is a very positive and supportive person, making sure everyone is on track and asks for help when needed.

Mickler has been teaching for 19 years but has been a journalism teacher for 17. She is a very considerate person; she enjoys making sure others are doing well while always checking up on her students.

The teacher is joyful with the amount of students intrigued by journalism.

“My favorite thing about journalism is that I get to have a lot of students year after year. It’s one of the only classes you can take each year of high school. I also love that the newspaper is a time capsule and place to showcase all of the good in our community and school. We get to tell great stories and bring people to life through the articles we produce,” says Mrs. Mickler.

Due to Mickler being a journalism teacher here at Struthers, her and her class is very well known. More than 70% of the students take this class. Some have even taken this class their whole high school career. Along with writing articles each year, you get a club hoodie. All the kids look forward to them each year.

Mickler gives the students freedom; she encourages creative and critical thinking.

“I like to allow writers to create their own topics and questions when writing articles; I also encourage them to use other articles to model theirs as well,” says Mickler.

Journalism is an elective class where students get the opportunity to write about what interests them.

Mickler was ready to make a change in her career early on and come to high school.

“The job was open when I left middle school to be here; I was excited to challenge myself with the experience and build the program into something I was proud of and students would want to take,” says Mickler.
