“American Sniper” is a war/action film that was based off of the autobiography of Chris Kyle “The American Sniper.”
“American Sniper” is one of the best selling autobiographies and highly successful films about a Navy SEAL named Chris Kyle who served 4 tours in Iraq and is considered the most deadly sniper of all time with 160 confirmed kills. The movie starts off showing Chris Kyle growing up in Texas with a strong mindset father. After hearing about bombings in 1998, he decided to join the Navy. While he endures his SEAL training, he meets Taya Renee and they end up getting married before his first deployment. During this deployment, he quickly earns the nickname Legend for his amazing accuracy and ability to save lives. The movie strongly focuses on the psychological struggles with Chris, showing signs of PTSD and depression.
One downside about the movie is the political message. The movie shows many scenes of dehumanization in Iraq and ignores the crazy number of Iraqi people who were innocently killed. The movie showed the war stereotypes of Iraqi people and showed them as “savages.”
Another thing that could be critiqued is the historical accuracy. The movie created a dramatic event that didn’t really exist to make the movie more entertaining. For example, the Syrian rival sniper was the “main” antagonist for dramatic effect. The film also altered the timelines around to create a cinematic effect.
The movie deserves a 8.8/10. This is due to the fact that it truly shows what war is like, and people need to understand the good and the bad of war.
