Mrs. Bradley, the tenth grade English teacher at Struthers high school, is seeing an increasing usage of AI in her classroom.
In the English department, Mrs. Bradley and the others have seen a decrease in overall literacy skills, and a rise in the usage of A.I. Her classroom in specific has seen a big jump in AI usage in recent years.
The English savant, Mrs. Bradley, is especially feeling the burden of AI in her classroom.
“How is AI affecting English skills? Well they are not able to develop them, so when you take away their ability to use AI they cannot do the basic English class requirements,” Bradley stated.
She doesn’t mind students using AI as a tool, but she dislikes when her students write with 100% AI. She told me that engines like Chat GPT often don’t make good essays. Most of the time it writes without intent, completely veering off the topic, and misusing quotation marks.
The Student Council Organizer, Mrs. Bradley, thinks that AI is a good tool for students, but it is not perfect.
“I remember one time a student used 100% AI, but he still got a 70%, and that is without the points off for using Chat GPT. Obviously the spelling and grammar were really good, but it was boring, it lacked the humanity that makes it interesting to read, it was dry. You know I’m a passive aggressive princess so I left a little comment on it, *Pulls out the paper* Here, I said “AI is not a magic wand,” Bradley said.
AI is increasingly taking over education on the part of the students. According to the Digital Education Council, “86% of students use AI globally for studies.” It is a tool that, like the calculator, will never be stopped. So the question is how to control it.
Mrs. Bradley, the career-long English teacher, thinks that she has a sound solution when it comes to controlling AI in her classroom.
“We need stricter penalties, clear expectations and guidelines for use, and more pencil work in order to prevent AI from eliminating education as a whole,” She stated.
In her class she will implement punishments for being sneaky about AI, encourage students to use it productively, and assign more paper and pencil work in her classroom. She is trying to get ahead of the curve, rather than being in the dust of the GPT.
