Taylor Swift released her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, on October 3, 2025, taking over the charts and breaking records with its first-week sales.
The album has 12 tracks–for it being her 12th album–and is 41 minutes long. The album opens with the lead single “The Fate of Ophelia.” On release weekend, “The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” was shown in theaters featuring a music video for “The Fate of Ophelia,” and lyric videos for every other track. This specific album takes a turn from her 11th, going from a synth-pop with sadder songs to a more upbeat pop album. During its first week released, it sold over 4 million equivalent album units, making it the biggest first week for an album in modern music history.
The Life of a Showgirl is a strong and catchy pop album with lots of different genres of sound. It is a captivating listen that will automatically put you in a better mood. With hits like “Opalite,” “Wood,” and “The Life of a Showgirl (feat. Sabrina Carpenter)”, it displays Swift’s happiness in her current life with their upbeat music and lyrics. There are other songs on the album that are more personal to Swift like “Father Figure” and “Actually Romantic” that–while still being happy and amusing–have deeper meanings. Overall, this album puts its listeners in an exciting mood with its joyful lyrics and compelling music.
This album, while being loved by many, also has much criticism towards the lyrics. Many would say that the lyrics are lacking compared to her other works like Folklore and The Tortured Poets Department. She incorporates outdated phrases and words used in the media that don’t sit right in a professionally recorded album. The lyrics are more surface level compared to the other deliberate works she has out, and while there are still some decipherable and deep lyrics on the album, they are overshadowed by the superficial lyrics in many of the songs.
The album The Life of a Showgirl deserves a 4/5 star rating for its lively and energetic music, joyful lyrics and captivating melodies.
