A young woman Millie takes on a new job as a housemaid for the Winchester family, who is wealthy and seems like the perfect family. However, Millie discovers secrets about the Winchesters, while also keeping her own.
In the novel, “The Housemaid”, written by Freida McFadden, Millie decides to work as a housemaid for the Winchesters after getting hired by Nina Winchester and living in their mansion. She stays up in the attic; however, the room is small with no windows and a mini fridge with only water. As time goes on throughout the novel, Millie discovers horrifying secrets about the Winchester family. She develops deep relationships with characters, especially with Andrew Winchester, who is the husband of Nina, and gets trapped in Nina and Andrew’s unhealthy relationship. Millie finds out who the true villain is, and now she has to figure out how to survive, while also keeping a secret of her own.
The plot in “The Housemaid” mainly focuses on Millie’s backstory and her time working for the Winchesters. Throughout the whole plotline, Millie is mainly focused on keeping her backstory a secret and figuring out what’s going on in the Winchester family. From the outside, the Winchesters are perfect, with a young daughter and rich parents. Yet Millie sees conflict within the Winchester family and is determined to figure out the truth. The story ends on a cliffhanger, where Millie goes and works for a different wealthy family after resolving the conflict at the Winchesters. There are many plot twists within the story and an ending to the story that leaves readers wanting more.
Millie’s relationships throughout “The Housemaid” develop quickly throughout the novel. When she begins her new job, Nina quickly shows resentment towards Millie. Nina appears erratic and unwell in the books, which makes Millie dislike her. Millie also grows a very strong relationship with Andrew, and they even grow to develop a romantic relationship. However, by the end of the novel, these relationships change after the plot twists and the climax of the story.
“The Housemaid”deserves a 5/5 star rating because of the unexpected plot twists, the fast-paced plot and the unique ending which leaves the readers on the edge of their seats.
