ENGLISH FESTIVAL ENCOURAGES STRUTHERS FRESHMEN

Students from Struthers went to the YSU English Festival on April 24th at YSU’s campus.

The YSU English Festival is an annual event held in April that aims to promote reading in students from grades 7-12. In order to attend the festival, students who intend to participate must first read the 7 books that are assigned to their grade level. The books they read are what the festival is built around, as they go through the various workshops that are available to them.

William Bradley, a freshman at Struthers, appreciates the opportunities.

“I like to go with friends and hopefully win money, also getting out of school and getting Chick-fil-a is a bonus,” says the freshman.

Bradley earned 1st place in his Journalism Workshop and the previous year he attended, he had won 3rd place. He plans on attending the festival next year as well.

He was feeling fulfilled after winning in his workshop.

Bradley says, “I felt rewarded after finally getting 1st.”

Mrs. Mickler, an English and Journalism teacher at the high school, was the one who encouraged students to join and took them to the English Festival. This year she brought 20 students to the festival, which was one of biggest groups she has ever taken. She was proud of Bradley who won 1st place; she knew he could use his skills this year along with his knowledge of the Journalism Workshop from last year. She had full confidence in him and was very excited when he won.

She enjoys seeing all the effort put in have good outcomes.

“I always like to see if we win awards! It’s exciting to see hard work pay off,” says Mickler.

Additionally, Elliana Bonilla, another freshman at Struthers, won 4th place for an art piece she made and submitted in the Stephanie Gent Art Contest prior to the festival. Also, Mannie Perez earned an honorable mention in the Writing Games.
