“How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” stars Kate Hudson, a women’s magazine writer and Matthew McConaughey, an advertising executive. Andie (Kate Hudson) and Ben (Matthew McConaughey) dive into a relationship with hidden intentions that clash.
Andie Anderson is a writer who works for “Composure” magazine and lately has been finding herself bored with the latest topics she has been assigned. Andie believes that she should be able to write about more important topics like politics and religion, but her boss disagrees. She ends up writing an article called “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” which was inspired by her bestfriends recent heartbreak. Using her friends’ experience, she establishes that she will date a guy briefly, then easily dismisses them, and makes her article about how she drove her boyfriend away. Andie meets Ben not long after and decides that he is the perfect person for her article, not knowing that Ben had just made a bet that he can persuade any woman to fall in love with him in only 10 days. Neither Andie nor Ben reveal their true intentions, which becomes a problem because they both begin to fall in love despite the deals made and fights they had. In the end, both are left hurt after learning that their actions were not genuine, leading to them going their separate ways. Ben is forced to read Andie’s article published, and once he does, he is shocked to find out how she truly felt about him. After calling her bluff, they confess their true, underlying feelings for each other.
This movie is an amazing example of lighthearted fun, which is part of why it’s so great. “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” keeps the audience engaged because of the constant back and forth between both characters. Their character development is significant as they work through the challenges of falling in love. As their relationship progresses, they both become more vulnerable with each other and grow closer together.
In the film, it mainly focuses on the surface level bond they have. We see them playing “games” with one another and ultimately drive each other away. If it showcased their genuine connection that they have, it would have added to the plot immensely. This would have made their “breakup” more emotional for the audience and would make the relationship that they have more relatable.
This movie deserves 5/5 stars due to the comedy and lighthearted romance portrayed. This is a movie I can re-watch multiple times and not get tired of it.
