Mrs. Mary Bundy has been a teacher at Struthers High School for 29 ½ years. This year being her last before retirement, she has a lot of wisdom to share.
Mrs. Bundy has taught at Struthers throughout her entire career and has always loved being a teacher. When asked if she regrets the path she took, she insists that she wouldn’t have changed a thing.
Bundy has a lot to take away from her teaching career.
“I think my biggest take away is realizing how many lives I got to touch during my career. Don’t be afraid of taking ‘that step’,” says Bundy.
She enjoys the banter and shenanigans that come with having a teacher-student relationship. Her favorite memories often involve setting up and organizing proms, specifically the 2015 prom when prior student Sarah Williams won prom queen.
There are a few things that come to mind when Bundy is asked what her inspirations for teaching are.
Bundy says, “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. One of my favorite teachers in high school encouraged me to go into education. I decided on Special Education after reading a novel, “A Circle of Children” by Mary MacCracken, who was a teacher who wrote about the kids who became part of her life.”
Bundy doesn’t have many plans for retirement, but she has a few things in mind. She hopes to continue traveling with her husband, riding their Harley’s, sewing and crafting.
Bundy has one quote and message left to share.
Bundy says, “Mark Twain once said, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.” I found work that I truly enjoyed and allowed me to make a difference in so many lives in a positive way. That doesn’t mean I didn’t have to work hard and face challenges along the way. I’d like to say thank you to my students for letting me help and show you the way through your high school years and making memories with them. Sometimes it might not have been the way everyone else thought things should have been or could have been done, but we did it anyway and you made it. Everything, all the moments good and questionable, made my career everything I hoped it would be. Thank you to everyone who was with me for the ride!”
