Devi Vishwakumar navigates her way through highschool and experiences grief, family dynamics and relationships.
Season 1 starts with Devi’s sophomore year of high school with her still struggling after the recent death of her father from her freshman year. She wants a fresh start this year and to also climb the social ladder with her two friends, Eleanor (Ramona Young) and Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez). Since she thinks getting a boyfriend will help her become more popular she starts having a crush on Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet). In season 2, Devi decides to date both Paxton and Ben at the same time which when they found out about this they were both really upset. Even though she manages to work things out with Paxton, her relationship with Ben was still complicated but then Devi ends up getting in a relationship with Paxton instead. Lastly, in season 3 it begins with Devi and Paxton in a committed relationship which causes other girls at school to be jealous of her. Paxton ends up breaking up with her and after this she goes back to Ben to end off this season.
This show is very easy to binge watch when you are bored and want something to do. Not only that, but it talks about topics of overcoming grief and even how important friends are. For example, when Devi lost her father she was able to overcome this by living her life the best she could. Also Devi’s friends are there for her and help her through the hardships she experiences. Not only this, but this show is a very good family movie to watch with family as well as friends.
Throughout the show, many say that it missed the mark in portraying Indian-American culture. The show portrays Idians as extremely conservative and narrow-minded. The show stereotyped Indian accents and misinterpreted the religion Hinduism. Also, the storyline was kinda repetitive with how Devi’s main focus was for guys she liked. Devi constantly switched between boys, and it barely went into the topics of her life. This made the show less interesting and it could have done a better job at displaying Devi’s culture and religion.
This show deserves a 7 out of 10 stars because of the funny actors and the plot. However, the show could have done better at displaying culture and going more in depth of Devi’s personality.
