Ohio State player Gunnar Wolfe Fontaines had an amazing game having scored 2 of the 4 goals scored in the game and helped lift Ohio State to a 4-3 win in overtime over Penn State.
Ohio State Head Coach Steve Rohlik said he believed that game was intense and a hard fought game, and he believes that those are 2 playoff teams right there.
Steve Rohlik encapsulated the intensity of the game, stating, “That’s playoff hockey right there.”
Penn State had a good overall 2nd period of the game, having scored 2 of their 3 goals in that period.
Last time Penn State and Ohio State played, Penn State pulled through in the overtime defeating them 8-7.
Dismarsico Matt, forward for Penn State, had a good goal late in the 3rd period to tie the game up at 3-3.
Forward Dylan Lugris was confident that if his teammates were more positive and stayed with high energy the whole game we would beat them again.
Lugris said, “If we stay positive on the bench and keep picking each other up… it’s going to be a lot different.”
Coming into the season no one expected Ohio State to be doing this well later on in the season and beating some of these higher-ranked teams or being so high up in the ranking like they are.
Last season, Ohio State hockey was ranked last in the Big Ten out of 7 total teams having not made the Big Ten championship or playoffs. This year Ohio State had already made the Big tTn championship game having to face Michigan state.
After how they have been performing this year, there is no doubt that they can make a deep run in the playoffs and can compete for a national championship.
Star player Riley Thompson thinks that his head coach has a very big impact on this team’s success this year, and he deserved the Coach of the Year award.
Thompson said, “It’s the way he’s coached us and brought this team together.I don’t think anyone expected us to be where we are right now. All that credit goes to him.”
