Eighteen-year-old Madeline is allergic to almost everything, so she has not left her house in 17 years. The only people she sees are her mom and her nurse, Clara.
In the book, “Everything Everything” by Nicola Yoon, Maddy wants to experience the outside world and have a normal life. She eventually wants to have a relationship despite the complex situation she is in. However, one day, a moving truck arrives next door, and she looks out her window and sees Olly. He is tall, lean and wearing all black. Olly caught Maddie looking at him, and they found themselves staring at each other. Then Maddie begins to embrace her life outside her comfort zone, even though it may be harmful to her health. Although they can not predict the future, Maddy can for sure predict that she is going to fall in love with Olly, and it is certainly going to end up being a disaster.
The characters in “Everything Everything” show the realities of Maddy’s situation and how she is supposed to be in complete isolation from the world. The main characters in the book include Maddy, Olly, Carla and Maddy’s mom Pauline. The characters in the book are very important because they drive the plot forward through their complex relationships. Maddy and Olly have a deep connection, even though they do not meet until further into the book. They first communicate through emails, which is followed by visits, and they end up going on a trip together. They first met in real life because Olly and his father were arguing, so Maddy went over to his house. Another relationship is between Maddy and Carla. They have a very close, caring and trusting relationship because Maddy has known Carla her whole life. Maddy’s mom is very protective of her because of her illness, which then leads to anger and resentment. Overall, these characters evolve Maddy’s understanding of love and life.
Another important aspect of the book includes the setting of Maddy and her mom’s house in Los Angeles. This setting is important because it adds to the story’s emotional impact. In the house, Maddy’s room is all white because of the fact she is allergic to everything. This contributes to the isolation that Maddy faces and how she can never really have time to herself because Carla comes to check on her every hour. It also shows how Maddy is searching for a connection and experience since she has been in her house all of her life. Also, if she had not lived there, she would have never met Olly, and they would have never lived next to each other. Moreover, the setting plays a big role because if Maddie did not live there, the plot would be completely different.
All in all, “Everything Everything” would be rated a ⅘ because it was a page-turner, and very intriguing. This book would be recommended to someone because it is a really good read, and it makes you wonder what is going to happen next.
