Struthers High School spring sports are getting underway in the next couple of weeks.
With winter sports coming to an end, spring sports are the next hot topic.
Struthers athletics offers some different spring sports, the first one being baseball. The varsity team has 19 people on it with the starting line-up already picked out. They started open gyms in October but have had numerous practices and scrimmages getting prepared for this season. The starting pitchers vary between Drew Chizmar, Jordan Becker, Michael Scavnicky and Issac Wolfe. The catcher behind the plate is sophomore Travis McMurry.
When preparing for a new season, the team always has an achievement to reach.
“Our goal is always to make our way to districts and state, but we also hope to bat over 0.500 this year just like always. But as a team we are trying to win one inning at a time and keeping energy up no matter the situation,” says sophomore player Jackson West.
The second spring sport that Struthers athletics offers is softball. The starting line up has already been chosen for the season featuring senior Katie Morris at the mound and sophomore Viviann Marker behind the plate. The girls have been preparing for the season with both indoor and outdoor practices. They have also had many scrimmages, beating Windham in one and only losing by one run to Lowellville. The girls continue to bring positive energy to every game and have a good feeling about the season.
This year the girls get to participate in something different from other years.
“I’m really looking forward to our trip to Tennessee during spring break. I’m really excited for it because I love my teammates, and this will be a fun time to hang around them and also get to experience different teams in Tennessee,” says junior player Ella Bailey.
The last spring sport is track and field. The coaches have prepared the athletes for the future meets with a lot of conditioning and practices. The runners meet for an hour and a half every day after school to practice on the track or turf. Even when the weather is too bad to go outside, they go into the lifting room and do exercises to help them get faster and stronger. Their first meet is April 2 at Girard.
There’s one problem that a lot of runners face because it’s an individual sport.
“I think one of the biggest challenges I might face would be how I view myself. I am constantly in my head and that’s the main problem I have been facing,” says sophomore Amira West.
