In a small town called Stars Hollow, you follow the lives of Lorelai (Lauren Graham), a young, single mother, and her daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel), through everyday experiences, family conflicts and Rory’s aspirations.
This series is a comedy-drama that focuses on the uncommon mother-daughter relationship between Lorelai and Rory. The story is set in Stars Hollow, Connecticut where everybody knows everyone. Lorelai had a rough upbringing, being pregnant at 16, and leaving her parents house to raise Rory on her own terms. Lorelai never wanted to live the way she did growing up, so she gave it her all for Rory to grow up somewhere where she feels loved and accepted. Rory is 16 and is accepted into Chilton, a respected prep school where she spends the rest of her high school years because of her academic capabilities. The catch is Lorelai can’t afford to pay the school which forces her to break the silence between her and her parents. Richard (Edward Herman) and Emily (Kelly Bishop) gladly pay for Rory’s education, but only if they agree to Friday night dinners. Lorelai and Rory comply and attend those dinners, but that doesn’t stop the past from resurfacing, causing new problems. The rest of the story follows Rory through her college and adult years, where relationships are tested both romantically and between the mother-daughter duo. The two had a promise that they would always be best friends first, and mother daughter second, but when unspoken expectations get in the way, the two don’t know where they stand with each other anymore.
This is a well-developed show that only gets better, which is what is so great about it. It was unfortunate that the sequel “A Year in the Life” was not what the audience expected because of the plot change and unrealistic character portrayals. It felt as if it wasn’t the characters that everyone knew and loved in the actual show. It was more dispirited, and the choices everyone made were unlike them. It would have been amazing if they had kept the original idea and made it more lighthearted to keep the audience engaged.
“Gilmore Girls” was amazing in many ways. A highlight is the scenery and overall charm of the town. The small town appeal and the way they capture the beauty of Stars Hollow is admirable. It is perfect if you want to feel warm and cozy, or just want to put on something that brings you comfort.
“Gilmore Girls” deserves a solid 5/5 because of the witty dialogue and the charm of the characters and the town. This show is perfect if you need a feel-good, small town atmosphere.
