Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett got a huge contract extension on March 9th.
The Browns and Myles Garrett haven’t been on the best terms recently, as Garrett requested a trade. The Browns said they were unwilling to trade him and would like to keep him. The Browns signed Myles Garrett to a 4-year contract extension that runs through the 2030 season. $160 million contract extension with the Browns. $123.596 million is guaranteed of which $88.8 million is fully guaranteed at signing including a $21.54 million signing bonus.
With the contract extension, Garrett is now one of the highest paid defensive ends of all time.
“Andrew Berry and I spent the last 36 hours getting the deal done, basically,” said Garrett’s agent, Nicole Lynn. “Myles had a change of heart and he’s excited to go from Cleveland to Canton and chase a championship in Ohio. When he made that decision, he said ‘I want to get this done before free agency so I can start recruiting free agents, so I can help the team.’ And I said ‘alright, we have 24 hours to get this done’ and we did it.”
Since being drafted to the Browns, Garrett has had one of the biggest rolls on the Browns. As he has been setting records, winning awards and shaking up offenses since he came into the league. He is a six-time Pro Bowler, as well with the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. He hopes to add on to that list and add a Super Bowl to his name.
Garrett had always hoped and planned to stay on the team he was drafted too, and it’s looking like that’s going to happen.
“I’ve always wanted to end my career here,” Garrett said. “The team I started with, I wanted to end with. And with the contract now, that’ll likely be how things go for as long as they’ll have me. I’m glad to be here, and I’m glad to have supported Cleveland,” says Garrett.
Garrett started to think that he wasn’t ever going to win a Super Bowl with the Browns. Being a champion is Garrett’s goal and to win with the team he was drafted to as well. The team said they weren’t going to trade Garrett, then offered a contract that pays big, to keep Garrett and keep the Super Bowl hopes alive.
Despite Garrett’s and the Browns’ fallout, Garrett wants to stay in Cleveland and wants to win a Super Bowl with the team as well.
“It’s going to take everything and whatever it takes. I’m willing to give,” Garrett said. “I want to be a winner. I want to bring a championship back to Cleveland. So, whether that’s going out and recruiting, whether that’s staying late, that’s mentoring the young guys, just whatever it takes, I’m going to do it all. Because I don’t want to come back here the same way we did after last season. I don’t want that feeling ever again. I want to feel like we’re taking more and more strides to that promised land,”says Garrett.
