Struthers students have a plethora of clubs and extracurriculars to choose from when entering the high school. A popular one is the French Club. The club explores French culture and traditions while also making good memories for the students.
The club is offered to all students involved in french. French students find themselves lucky to be able to embrace the culture and enjoy traditions and dishes from French backgrounds. They have many activities including movie nights, dinners and celebrations of certain holidays.
French club student Amanda Maro gives an insight of what the class is like.
“French Club is a very inclusive place where anybody can go to make friends and embrace French culture. The various activities in the club are fun for everyone, no matter your language level. Only nice things are tolerated in the club, and it is a very positive environment no matter who you are,” says Maro.
A lot of the activities revolve around cultural introduction. Whether that’s through food or traditions the students have a great time. The club meets once a month–twice if they’re lucky. Students say the club is like an extended version of their everyday French class, giving them more time to enjoy the culture with their friends.
One celebration in particular catches Maro’s attention.
“My favorite activity would probably be Mardi Gras because it is a very hands-on holiday where we can create the masks and have different ones from everybody else, since you personally make it for yourself,” says Maro.
Food plays a big part in any culture, especially French with all of their delicacies and delicious desserts. The club recently did a cafe night for the members, and they are looking forward to celebrating Madri gras soon.
Maro admires all of the fun little traditions in French culture.
Maro says, “The French have very quirky traits, and they like to have fun, which is reflected in their holidays. Mardi Gras is always fun to do, and Manie Musical is always a fun thing that you can talk about with anybody in French. We also have a crepe night (the French love their crepes) which is very fun to do because they are very good and fun to make.”
